the rich cultural history of the Hartbeespoort Dam. Construction of the dam wall commenced in August 1916 and was completed in April 1923. The dam wall with its historical replica of the Arc de Triomphe in France, is today one of the very few dam walls left in the world, that still carry public traffic. The area is also steeped in the Anglo-Boer War history, of which the British memorial just outside of Birdwood Estate bears witness. Hartbeespoort is also a geologically rich area and offers easy access to mines in the Platinum Belt.

Time, however, has seen the Hartbeespoort Area developing into one of the most up market residential areas in South Africa. It is widely spoken of, by some as the Monaco of South Africa and by others, as Switzerland without the snow.
